While still in college, Kevin tried out for the '92 Olympic Team. Kevin was the youngest competitor in the trials and took fourth place. Despite exceeding others expectations of his performance, Kevin's resistance to losing and will to win motivated him to train full time for the '96 Olympics. The '96 Olympics was one of the happiest and saddest days of Kevin's life. He had an opportunity to be involved with something that he had dreamed about as child, but as an alternate.
Kevin went into the 2000 Trials as the favorite. Kevin won the first match of the best of 3 series by a score of 4-0. The next match would be the last as Kevin scored a 7-4 decision to claim a spot on the U.S. Greco-Roman Team.
