Kevin attended and competed for Illinois State University from 1991 to
1995 where he broke the school’s career wins record. Even so, all this
collegiate success did not earn him NCAA All-American status. Commenting on this, Kevin says "Sometimes you must learn to win by
losing." Upon Kevin‘s return from Nationals his senior year, ISU
Athletic Director Rick Greenspan announced the school’s decision to drop its
wrestling program, rather than adding a women‘s program, in order to comply
with Title IX. Kevin feels that Title IX is a good concept meant to
encourage women’s sports, not to take away opportunities from men.
After the '96 Olympics, which he attended as an alternate, Kevin
accepted the job of top assistant coach at Northern Illinois University. In
this job, he helped coach two-time All-American wrestler Jeremy Goedan, the school's first All-American in 22 years. Kevin believes that his coaching experience has helped him gain perspective and has benefited his own wrestling. "I loved coaching at
the collegiate level. It was extremely rewarding, it really gave me a chance
to touch some lives and pass on all my wrestling experience."
